Pride. It either motivates me or convinces me that every feedback is a personal attack. Throw in my sensitivity, and this could easily turn to overly critical and unhealthy thoughts.
Anyone else feel like this sometimes?
Whether it be poor grades, criticism, disagreement, unsatisfied clients, or only average performance reviews, we all encounter feedback that falls short of praising our craft. If your pride is like mine…that feedback might even be insulting.
“Get over it.” “What can you do.” “It is how it is.” These tips didn’t work well for me, so here are some ways I've tackled this on.
Be open-minded, and acknowledge the need for improvement.
We’re not perfect. We’re constantly learning. Reflect, and be honest with yourself. When you hear the feedback, it won’t come as much of a surprise, and perhaps you already have a plan in place to improve.
Prepare.
Of course we can’t plan unexpected events, but I tend to ease my thoughts by having a “if-then” system in place. If you listen to Jay Shetty, you know what I’m talking about! “If the parent calls yelling, I’ll say this __.” “If my plan doesn’t work, I’ll transition and implement this __.”
Positive affirmations.
We don’t need to perceive feedback negatively. Better said than done, I know. Make room for positive thoughts about yourself. Read your affirmations t/o the day, and leave reminders for yourself.
Meditate.
We have access to so many free guided meditation practices with options that can accommodate anyone's comfort level. Personally, I like them short, sweet, & powerful. Negativity Blockers is one of my faves!
Get social, or cozy up with a pup.
Catching up with friends and talking about them is a change of scenery in my head! It definitely pulls me away from current stressors and anxiety. (Also, cuddling with my pup is just a preferred activity in my household anyway).
Reiki, anyone?
This is next on my to-do list! Reiki sessions aim to help release negative energy throughout your body and aura. If you’ve tried this before, I’d love to hear about your experience.
